The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced today that former Medford resident Robert C. Luisi has been convicted on drug charges.
Luisi, 46, was convicted of conspiracy to possess cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
According to the FBI, evidence presented during the nine-day trial revealed that Luisi was a Capo Regime, or lieutenant, in the Philadelphia mafia and that Luisi and his crew operated in the Boston area.
Luisi was nabbed after an undercover FBI agent successfully infiltrated his crew and recorded Luisi’s conversations about cocaine distribution and sales.
“Luisi’s conviction is the direct result of outstanding work by the FBI in investigating this case, both in the District of Massachusetts and Philadelphia. The case should serve as a cautionary tale for any organized crime groups that might be tempted to test the waters in Massachusetts. The consequences will be severe,” said US Attorney Michael Sullivan.
The trial was Luisi’s second on the drug charges, as an appeals court overturned Luisi’s first conviction in 2002 and ordered a new trial. The FBI did not elaborate on why Luisi was ordered to have a new trial.
Luisi faces a minimum sentence of ten years and could face life in prison. He will be sentenced on May 8.
