The Medford High School Varsity Cheerleading team capped off undefeated fall and winter seasons with a national title, their third in just six years.

The last time MHS cheerleaders were both state and national champions in the same year was 1998, and the team could not be more excited or the coaches more proud.

“When they saw the score sheets from the first day, they were not happy. But, clearly, it kicked them into high gear and they went out on Saturday and just nailed it! People in the crowd kept stopping me asking: ‘Are they an all star team? And, your team had the most entertaining and challenging routine we have ever seen!’” Said Head Coach Julie Brown Santos.

The Lady Mustangs won by beating St. Laurence High School from Illinois, earning 290 out of a possible 325 points in the varsity medium mount division at the Cheerleaders of America Ultimate National Cheerleading Championship.

In addition to a tall, shiny trophy, the girls took home suede jackets and a banner in honor of all of their hard work for this arguably unforgettable season.

“It was wonderful that so many of the parents made the trip to share this special moment with their daughters. What a fitting way to end a very successful year and one this team will always remember,” said Coach Brown Santos.

In addition, Medford High School was named a top five finalist for the “Race for the Rings” contest, hosted by American Cheerleader Magazine.

The Medford Mustang Nationals Championship team includes: Capt Paige McGlynn, Capt Janelle DeSanto, Capt Brittany Medeiros, Jordan Joyce, Courtney Hayes, Lindsy Somers, Jenn O’Brien, Gianna Aliberti, Courtney Galvin, Lisa Cardone, Christina Cardone, Anne Raimo, Kasey Cloutier, Lindsey Mills, Darla Vitale, Jessica Albano, Jessica Medeiros, and Krysten Sheppard. They are coached by Santos, Lisa Evangelista and Nannette Ciampa.
