Wealthy Engineering Grad Leaves Tufts Historic Gift

Cash Gift of $136 Million is Largest in School History

Tufts University’s largest donation in its history has come from a 1911 engineering graduate that passed away in 1969.

The $136 million cash gift came from a trust established by Frank Doble, an enterprising engineering student that went on to establish his own successful company after graduating from Tufts.

According to the university, Doble’s gift will support the development of an interdisciplinary lab for research and collaboration in biology and engineering, and will also go toward financial aid, faculty, and other needs.

The new lab will likely be built on Tufts property at 550 and 574 Boston Avenue in Medford, near the current Science and Technology Center.

“In founding Doble Engineering, Frank Doble pushed the boundaries of science and technology, just as our faculty and students do today. We are grateful that his legacy will help future generations to attend Tufts and enable us to create a new laboratory, named in his honor, to advance collaboration among our biologists and engineers,” said Tufts President Lawrence Bacow.

Doble, an electrical engineering student, paid his way through Tufts by installing and wiring a new telephone system at the school.

His company, Doble Engineering Company, is currently based in Watertown and was purchased in 2007 by ESCO Technologies of St. Louis.
