Trane Launches Campaign Against Rep. Sciortino
|– Allison Goldsberry
Somerville Alderman Bob Trane will challenge State Representative Carl Sciortino (D-Medford) for his House seat come fall.
Trane pulled nomination papers just three days before the deadline to return them, and according to his campaign, easily collected more than the 150 required signatures from registered voters in the district to run.
Trane, a three-term alderman and lifelong Somerville resident, said voters are worried about their finances and “are looking for a change” on Beacon Hill. He called upon his “strong record of delivering constituent services” and said voters are eager to “vote for change.”
Trane also took a swipe at Rep. Sciortino when he announced his campaign, saying he would be fighting the “entrenched special interests of Beacon Hill.” Rep. Sciortino, who supported Trane’s opponent in Somerville’s elections last year, said Trane also called him “elitist” and “out of touch.”
Trane had no comment, and Rep. Sciortino said it was “disappointing” that Trane resorted to name-calling when launching his campaign.
Rep. Sciortino defended his record in an email to supporters, saying that constituent services have always been a top priority and that he was proud of all he has accomplished in his four years as state rep for Medford and Somerville. Rep. Sciortino said he helped increase local aid and education funding and helped secure money for the Green Line Extension project.
Trane is running as a Democrat and will square off against Rep. Sciortino in a Democratic Primary scheduled for September 16.
State Rep. Paul Donato (D-Medford) also faces competition in his district from Patrick McCabe, a 36-year-old union organizer and West Point graduate. That Democratic Primary is also scheduled for September 16.
