Rep. Markey Votes Against Iraq War Funding

US Representative Edward MarkeyAfter anti-war activists threatened to storm his Medford office, US Representative Edward Markey voted against more funding for the Iraq war.

Rep. Markey, a Malden Democrat, voted against $162.5 billion in funding for the Iraq war.

“Five years on and no plan for withdrawal in sight, we cannot keep funding this open-ended war. Our men and women in uniform have served with bravery and honor, but the cost of this war has been far too high. While the president has decided to leave the businesses of ending the war to his successor, I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues in Congress to find an effective and responsible way to end this misguided war,” said Rep. Markey in a statement to the media on Thursday.

Rep. Markey’s office said the Congressman also voted for separate provisions that require US troops to begin deploying from Iraq within thirty days of enactment and that increase benefits for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
