Rep. Sciortino Says Nomination Papers Stolen

State Representative Carl SciortinoFiles Suit Seeking Ballot Access

State Representative Carl Sciortino (D-Medford) announced Wednesday that he has filed suit in Suffolk County Superior Court seeking ballot access certification by the Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin.

Official records show that Representative Sciortino had a total of 186 signatures certified by Medford and Somerville in advance of the April 29 deadline. This is 36 in excess of the 150 needed to qualify for the ballot.

Once local elections offices certify signatures, there is a twenty-eight day window before signatures and other documents need to be filed with Secretary Galvin’s office. During this time, Representative Sciortino reported to police the disappearance of several of his certified nomination papers.

Sciortino released the following statement today:

“I’ve collected – and the cities of Medford and Somerville have certified – more than the number of signatures required to have my name placed on the ballot. I’m looking forward to resolving this matter quickly so I can continue to focus on the issues important to my community and share what I’ve been able to accomplish in the past four years with the voters of my district.”

Rep. Sciortino, running for his third term, faces competition from Somerville Alderman Bob Trane. Both men are running as Democrats and the Democratic Primary is scheduled for September 16.
