Rep. Garballey also Honors Student with Citation

When Tufts student Matt Cohen founded an afterschool tutoring program for immigrant youth in Somerville, meeting the world champion Boston Celtics was not something that ever crossed the young Jumbo’s mind.

However, Cohen got to do just that when he was honored at a home game back in March with a “Heroes Among Us” award for his efforts in establishing a successful tutoring program at Centro Presente that has helped all ten of the students involved in the program go to college.

The Celtics had this to say about Cohen: “Through his tireless efforts and impressive devotion to social change and youth empowerment, Matt Cohen founded a unique after-school program for immigrant youth in Somerville. The ‘Academic Program at Centro Presente’ provides much needed support with English tutoring, homework assistance, SAT preparation, and perhaps most importantly, offers mentors for each student.

As a Tufts student himself, Matt has recruited over 20 other members of the Tufts community to volunteer in his program. Amazingly, and in large part due to the incredible work of Matt’s tutors, of the ten high school seniors in the program, 100% will be attending college next year!

For his outstanding dedication to providing educational opportunities for youth in need, please join us in welcoming Matt Cohen!”

State Representative Sean Garballey (D-Arlington, Medford) also recognized Cohen with a citation on July 23.

The “Heroes Among Us” award is presented at every Celtics home game and nearly 400 people have been recognized with the award. The award is co-sponsored by the Celtics, WEEI, the Massachusetts State Lottery, and Comcast SportsNet.
