The Medford High School girls soccer team will be led by a new face this fall.
Twenty-three year-old Stoneham native and Bridgewater State College graduate Jessica Chiachio will lead the team this year and is hoping to build upon what has traditionally been a strong program.
“We’re thrilled we have a girls soccer coach…We’re confident that Jessica is going to continue the tradition [former MHS girls soccer coach] George [Scarpelli] has set,” said MHS Athletic Director Bob Maloney.
“I’m very excited and looking forward to starting practice,” said Chiachio.
Though Chiachio grew up in Stoneham she said all of her family is from Medford and she is happy to be coaching here.
Maloney said Chiachio is a “highly decorated” soccer player out of Stoneham High and Bridgewater, and is Bridgewater’s third all-time goal-scorer.
School Superintendent Roy Belson this is Chiachio’s first gig as head coach and Medford would like for the new coach to “grow with the program.”
Last season Medford finished second in the Greater Boston League with a 10-5-2 record. They were knocked out by Westford during the first round of the state tournament.
Chiachio said she would love to see the girls make it to the state tournament again but she also wants the team, especially the seniors, to look back and be proud of their season and their performance.
“We’ll take it one game at a time. All I can ask for is they go out there and try their hardest,” said Chiachio.
The team opens up the season Monday, September 8, at 3:45PM against Tewskbury at home.
