Boys Soccer GBL World Cup Champions
|Medford Tops Somerville, Everett to Win League’s First Tournament
The Medford High School boys varsity soccer team emerged victorious from this weekend’s Greater Boston League World Cup Tournament, beating Somerville and Everett to become the first ever GBL World Cup Tournament Champions.
On Friday, the Mustangs hammered Somerville, coached by former Medford boys and girls soccer Coach George Scarpelli, 4-0. The Mustangs controlled the game from the beginning, with a solid defense, led by goalie Marcello Cugno, blocking the Highlanders and a relentless offense, led by Matt Diamond-Jones (2 goals), captain Bruno Araujo, and David Pires, scoring four goals.
The Mustangs went on to battle Everett on Saturday, their third meeting of the season against the Crimson Tide. Medford’s defense and offense came together for another clutch performance, with Cugno in the net and Diamond-Jones and Pires good for another two goals. Senior Destin Pierrot also scored for Medford and the Mustangs prevailed over Everett, 3-2.
The varsity team includes captains Philip Petrides, Bruno Araujo, Chris Vaudo, and Brett Cavallaro, and Marcello Cugno, Naama Mendes, Maxx Jamgochian, Matt Diamond-Jones, Valerie Labossiere, Joey Lopez, Destin Pierrot, John Dumbuya, Victor Silva, John Ghiozzi, Mike Rizzo, Ariel Lobo, Sergio Silva, Kenny DeAlmeidia, Vinny Soares, and Rico Altema. It is coached by Head Coach Mike Petrides and assistant coaches Luigi Mirisola and Mike Bourne.
