Medford Football Goes Down, but not Without Fight
|Everett Takes its First GBL Game of Season, 49-22; Medford Scores Most Points of Season
– Allison Goldsberry
To be fair, put just about any team in the state against Everett and it becomes a game of damage control, and luckily for Medford on Saturday, the Crimson Tide didn’t rub it in- too much, that is. The Mustangs actually scored the most points- 22- they have scored in any game of the season so far.
Pigskin powerhouse Everett High School, 156-16 in the past sixteen years, has won seven of its last ten Superbowl appearances. They are the reason the Greater Boston League has shrunk to just five teams, and none of those teams are standing in the way of its 14th GBL title in sixteen years. All roads to the GBL Football title lead through Everett, and the Crimson Tide are showing no signs of weakness as they march through the last half of their season against GBL rivals Medford, Somerville, Malden, and Cambridge.
Everett’s win against Medford Saturday afternoon showed how much depth the team has, as Everett did not keep its starters in for long. Despite a great effort by Medford, Everett dominated the entire game, scoring nearly each time they had possession of the ball, moving the ball down the field nicely, and blocking the Mustang offense.
After a lopsided first quarter that left Medford down twenty-eight zip, Medford got on the board when sophomore Ronnie Pitterson (#37) connected with an 18-yard pass from quarterback Alex Krasco (#15) in the second quarter. The Mustangs failed on an attempt for a 2-point conversion, but nailed it in the next two attempts, thanks to junior Juan Lopez (#23) and sophomore Rob DeLuca (#35).
In arguably the best play of the season, junior Jimmy Richardson (#42) connected with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Krasco that left Medford with 14, Everett with 42 at the half. Richardson would deliver again for the Mustangs in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
Everett is now 1-0 in the GBL and 6-1 overall, while the loss leaves Medford 0-2 in the GBL and 0-8 overall. The Mustangs take on Cambridge on November 7 and Malden Catholic on November 14, both at home, and then head to Malden for the annual T-Day showdown.
