Boys Soccer Defeats Waltham
|Mustangs Advance in State Tourney After Friday Night Win, Head to Framingham Sunday

The Medford High School boys varsity soccer team, 11-6-2, defeated Waltham (8-8-3) 3-1 in their first game of the state tournament on Friday night at Somerville’s Dilboy Field.
The Mustangs controlled the game from the beginning and dominated Waltham both offensively and defensively. The Mustang defense, including clutch goalie Marcello Cugno, held the Hawks to only one goal, which resulted from a penalty kick in the second half. Medford’s own Destin Pierott led the offfensive attack for the Mustangs with an amazing 3 goals.
The boys are seeded 12th out of 22 teams, while Waltham was the 21st seed. The Mustangs now head to #5 seed Framingham (12-0-6) for a Sunday morning game.
Greater Boston League rival Everett (#13, 11-6-2) defeated Lowell and heads to Peabody for a Sunday afternoon game, while Somerville (#17, 9-8-1) was knocked off by Woburn on Friday.
The varsity Mustang team includes captains Philip Petrides, Bruno Araujo, Chris Vaudo, and Brett Cavallaro, goalie Marcello Cugno, Naama Mendes, Maxx Jamgochian, Matt Diamond-Jones, Valerie Labossiere, Joey Lopez, Destin Pierrott, John Dumbuya, Victor Silva, John Ghiozzi, Mike Rizzo, Ariel Lobo, Sergio Silva, Kenny DeAlmeidia, Vinny Soares, and Rico Altema. It is coached by Head Coach Mike Petrides and assistant coaches Luigi Mirisola and Mike Bourne.
