Rep. Donato Named “Most Innovative Legislator”

Portal to Hope, a local non-profit that helps victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, has recognized State Representative Paul Donato (D-Medford, Malden) with a special award.
Rep. Donato is the recipient of the 2009 “Most Innovative Legislator” in honor of his “outstanding work in the cause to end domestic violence.”
“It was only through Rep. Donato’s help that we were able to start serving the [Medford] community through the Lawrence Memorial Hospital…Without Rep. Donato’s help, we wouldn’t be here…He is by far our most loudest [sic] advocate,” said Portal to Hope Executive Director Deb Fallon.
Rep. Donato praised the organiztion for working tirelessly and diligently to help domestic abuse and sexual violence victims.
“Portal to Hope brings an opportunity to safe shelter to those who are in need,” said Rep. Donato.
According to Rep. Donato, domestic violence calls account for half of the calls police departments receive.
Rep. Donato received his award before Tuesday’s City Council meeting. He also received special citations from the Council and Mayor Michael McGlynn.
Portal to Hope was founded in 1996 by a survivor of a violent crime and has partnered with local police and hospitals to assist victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. According to Fallon, the organization helped 114 victims in Medford in 2008 and nearly 1,000 overall. Portal to Hope mainly services victims and their families in Medford, Malden, Everett, Lynn, and surrounding communities.
