Rep. Garballey Appointed to Special Commission
|Commission to Consider Civic Engagement, Learning
State Representative Sean Garballey (D-Arlington, Medford) has been appointed to a special commission on civic engagement and learning.
“Improving participatory democracy and awareness among young people is extremely important to me as a State Representative and I am honored to have been selected,” said Rep. Garballey.
The special commission will study civic engagement and learning in Massachusetts and will assess the status of civic engagement from kindergarten through high school and undergraduate college education, including an assessment of the civic knowledge of public high school graduates. The Commission will consider such things as what types of service activities are available to students, and the connections students make with those activities to their own government and what they’re learning in history and social studies classes. It will also try to figure out what skills are essential in the development of “active citizens.”
The special commission will conduct public hearings to gather information and to raise awareness of civic engagement in the state, and seeks to involve educators, students, and the public at large in its discussions.
“I am looking forward to engaging educators, students, parents, and all interested citizens in the Town of Arlington and the City of Medford in working to improve civic engagement and learning throughout our Commonwealth,” said Rep. Garballey.
