About 150 parents and local officials gathered at Medford High School Thursday night to kick off Medford’s first Stand for Children chapter. The group is dedicated to organizing the community to advocate policy-makers for children’s needs, especially education funding. The group’s first meeting focused on how parents and local officials can work together to boost education funding despite a slumping economy and decrease in state aid. In his remarks at the meeting, Mayor Michael McGlynn said cutting teachers “cheats children,” and Medford is striving to avoid lay-offs despite deep local aid cuts by the state. Above, School Committee member Ann Marie Cugno, School Superintendent Roy Belson, Mayor Michael McGlynn, Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center Executive Director Noah Berger, and School Committee member Paulette Van der Kloot field questions from the audience. The meeting is airing in its entirety on Channel 15 in Medforfd at 9AM, 7PM, and 9PM. Photo courtesy Mike Cugno.
