Mustang Baseball Smashes South Boston
|– Allison Goldsberry
After suffering a lopsided defeat at the hands of former Greater Boston League rival Waltham last week, the varsity Mustang baseball team pulled out a lopsided victory against visting South Boston on Wednesday.
Southie started it off 2-0 in the top of the first, but then Medford responded with nine runs in the first inning alone. The Mustangs went on to score fourteen more runs, with the final score at 23-2.
Sophomore Danny Gilchrist pitched a complete game. Head coach Nick Tucci was pleased with Gilchrist’s performance, saying he pitched “efficiently and effectively.” Coach Tucci said Gilchrist pitched well in the pre-season and earned himself a spot in the starting rotation.
Offensively, every Mustang swung the bat well against Southie’s weak pitching. Junior captain Danny Gunn and Kyle Heath each slammed a home run, while sophomore Andrew Waldrip had two doubles and senior captain Richie LeBert got in some good hits.
The Mustangs, now 1-1, take on Somerville at home on Friday. The game is Medford’s first GBL match-up of the season. Somerville is looking strong and is so far undefeated at 5-0 but has yet to take on a GBL team. Junior Ian Fitzgerald will take the mound against Somerville.
Medford also has a busy schedule over the April break. They hit the road to take on Waltham on April 20, where they’ll be looking to avenge their home opener loss, and then head to Southie on April 22, followed by Cambridge on April 24.
