The Medford Mustang varsity baseball team ventured into enemy territory on Thursday and came back with a victory against South Boston, 18-5.
The team was once again led by junior captain Danny Gunn, three for four, with six RBI’s, and a dramatic grand slam. Junior John Mangiasi and sophomore Chris Salvati both had home runs. Sophomore Danny Gilchrist provided some solid pitching for the Mustangs.
This is the Mustangs’ second victory against South Boston, who lost to Medford 15-2 at Playstead Park on April 15.
The team is currently 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Greater Boston League. They hope to go 2-0 in the GBL when they head to Cambridge on Friday for a morning game.
Junior Ian Fitzgerald, who took the mound against Somerville last week for Medford’s 8-0 shutout victory, will pitch against Cambridge.
Head Coach Nick Tucci said pitching is key in pulling out a win, and when the Mustangs’ pitching is solid, the defense follows as well as the bats.
“If they can give us a quality start, we’ll probably win the ball game,” said Coach Tucci.
