Volunteers to Help Herring Cross Dam Friday, Saturday
|Annual Event Helps Fish Reach Breeding Ground in Upper Mystic Lake
Volunteers will descend upon the Mystic Lakes on Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30, to help herring get across the dam to reach the Upper Mystic Lake to lay their eggs during the 5th Annual Herring Bucket Brigade, sponsored by the Medford Boat Club. At left, a herring slides down an improvised “water slide” designed to help the fish get over the dam between the Lower Mystic Lake and the Upper Mystic Lake.
According to the Boat Club, the state fish and game department has issued a ban on taking herring from their waters due to their declining population.
The event is in its fifth and possibly final year.
