Century Bank Dedicates ‘Rose Garden’ in Square

Century Bank, the largest family-run bank in New England, recently announced the dedication of the Rose M. Sloane Garden in front of their bank in the center of Medford Square.

Medford Mayor Michael J. McGlynn joined the Sloane family and business leaders for the inauguration ceremony, which included presentations by local dignitaries and the unveiling of a commemorative marker in honor of Rose M. Sloane.

“Century Bank has made a real difference in Medford,” said Mayor McGlynn. “Once again, Medford’s hometown bank has helped strengthen the heart of the city. By refurbishing the garden and making the Plaza accessible to more families in the community, Century has proven to be more than a local financial institution; it is a business that cares about the quality of life for the people who live and work in Medford.”

The Rose M. Sloane Garden, located in the common area in front of the Bank’s Medford Square branch, has special significance to both Century Bank and the Sloane family, who run the banking institution. The garden is across the street from the former location of the family’s Sloane Furniture Store, which was opened in 1948 by Jacob and Rose Sloane, the parents of Marshall M. Sloane, Founder and Chairman of Century Bank.

“We are pleased to have partnered with the city to refurbish the garden in honor of my grandmother,” said Barry R. Sloane, Co-President and Co-CEO of Century Bank. “All year long, Century has been celebrating my father’s founding of the Bank 40 years ago, and this event is a wonderful way to merge the Sloane family’s history in our community with the City’s newest park.”

The recent renovation of the garden was executed by Tamar Zimmerman, the landscape architect who initially remodeled the garden nearly twenty years ago. Additionally, as part of its gift, Century Bank has arranged to assume responsibility for perpetual care of the garden.
