More MHS Students Earn AP Credit

MHS Class of ’09 Celebrates 227 Advanced Placement Exam Successes

The following announcement was released for publication by Medford High School Headmaster Dr. Paul Krueger:

The Medford High School Class of 2009 broke all MHS records for high achievement on Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations. Sixty-five recent graduates received 227 qualifying grades on the AP exams that they took during their sophomore, junior and senior years at Medford High School.

The number of Medford High School students receiving qualifying grades on AP exams has more than quintupled over the past 15 years – from 12 for the Class of 1994 to 65 for the Class of 2009.

These Medford High School students received a total of 227 qualifying grades on the AP exams, as compared with the 24 qualifying grades earned by the MHS Class of 1994. Over the past five years alone, the number of qualifying scores has risen by 62% – with the Class of 2004 earning 86 and the Class of 2009 earning 227.

Of these 227 qualifying grades, 41 were “perfect 5’s.” These exams, designed by the College Board, are graded on a five-point scale. (5 is the highest, and 3 is usually the cut-off qualifying grade.)

As college freshmen, these 65 Medford High School graduates will have the option of electing higher-level courses instead of the introductory courses that most college freshmen are required to take. Some of the students who earned multiple qualifying scores will be able to end their college career a semester or a year earlier than their classmates, thus being able to pursue their careers or advanced degrees earlier and foregoing a semester or year of tuition.
