Among the people taking part in this event will be Rabbi Braham David, Superintendent of Medford Public Schools Roy Belson, and Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn. Refreshments will be served and an exhibit of the temple’s artifacts will be on display.

Schedule
2:00 p.m. – A tour of Temple Shalom and its historic collection
3:00 p.m. – Presentations by Rabbi David, Roy Belson and Michael McGlynn; and two lectures:

Helen Epstein – Temple Shalom began humbly in a Chinese restaurant that once operated in Medford Square. Shortly thereafter it grew and relocated first to Water Street and then to its current site on Winthrop Street. Ms. Epstein will detail the history of this growth and of many of the people who made Temple Shalom’s success possible.

Ben Averbook – After playing roles in Medford’s history for centuries, Jewish people did not begin to migrate to Medford in considerable numbers until the 1950s. Mr. Averbook will recount the history of this migration from cities such as Chelsea, Everett, Revere and Winthrop and some of the physical and socioeconomic factors that contributed to it.
