Voter Turnout Increases for 2009 Election

This year, 26.5% of Medford’s voters cast ballots. That’s 9,182 of 34,703 registered voters, according to unofficial, preliminary numbers released by the Registrar of Voters office.

While the turnout is an increase over 2007, it’s still not as high as 2005’s turnout. In 2005, nearly 10,000 voters headed to the polls, or 30.49% of registered voters. In 2007, only 21% of Medford’s 32,914 registered voters cast a ballot.

Mayor Michael McGlynn, re-elected to his twelfth term, received the same percentage of the vote as he did in 2007, 72%, while the percentage of the vote earned by City Councilors decreased from 2007. City Councilor Paul Camuso topped the ticket and received 60% of the vote in 2007, while this year City Councilor Stephanie Muccini Burke topped the ticket and earned 52.4% of the vote. Councilors Burke and Camuso were the only Council candidates to earn more than 50% of the vote in this election, compared to 2007, in which each of the incumbent councilors earned over 50% of the vote.

None of the School Committee candidates earned more than fifty percent of the vote in 2007 or 2009, and the percentage of the vote earned this year decreased. School Committee member Ann Marie Cugno topped the ticket in 2007 and earned 47.2% of the vote, while new candidate George Scarpelli topped the ticket this year and earned 45.3% of the vote.
