Guzik: “Let’s Work Together”

The following is a statement from newly elected candidate Sharon Guzik, who will join the Medford School Committee in January 2010:

To the Editor:

I would like to thank the Medford citizens who voted for me to serve on the Medford School Committee. I appreciate your vote of confidence and I will serve you and Medford’s schools to the best of my ability. I would also like to thank the departing members of the school committee – Fred Pompeo, Lena Digiantomasso, Bill Brady, and Bob Skerry – for their long-time dedication to our schools. They have overseen many improvements to our public schools during their tenure and have served our city well for many years.

I am very excited to get to work with the newly elected school committee members and look forward to January. I have great confidence that the group that has been voted in will work well together as we help prepare our students for the 21st-century job market.

But we all need to work together – as parents and members of our community – to ensure that the Medford schools and our students achieve excellence. We will need your support and involvement. There are many ways to be involved: volunteer to tutor a student, contribute to school fundraisers, attend our schools performances, donate needed classroom supplies. Unfortunately, we will continue to see tough city and school budgets in coming and we will also need you to advocate for our schools at the state and federal levels.

We on the school committee will need to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and criticisms. It will be our job to help keep you informed about what is going on in the schools, but we will be counting on you to let us know what is going on in your corner of the school world and the community. Let us work together to propel our schools towards excellence.
