St. Francis Girls Hoops Kicks Off Winter Season
|St. Francis Girls Basketball kicked off another season on November 22nd.
This year, the K-8 program consists of over 120 girls making up an Instructional, Junior and Senior divisions in the in-house program and two travel teams that compete against other parish teams from the North Shore. The in-house program consists of 12 regular season games, playoffs, all-star game and end of season banquet, including the awarding of a $500 scholarship to a former player.

Junior League
Buckeyes 5, Celtics 4 – Emma Czwakiel scored three points and Kayla Dell’Anno netted a field goal to help the Buckeyes hold off the Celtics in this season-opening low scoring affair. Shannon Smith recorded both field goals for the Celtics.
Crush 16, Eagles 5 – Abigail Cline scored a game-high eight points to help the Crush defeat the Eagles. The Crush got baskets from four different players in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 10-3 to break open the close game. Abby McCarthy chipped in with four points in the win. Nicole Matarazzo and Narmene Bensaber were the scorers for the Eagles.
Senior League
Tar Heels 24, Angels 21 – Siobhan Turner scored a game-high 12 points to help the Tar Heels hold off the Angels. Turner made four of six free throw attempts in the second half and Deanna Hardy recorded three field goals for the Tar Heels, who held a 10-9 advantage at halftime. Kelly Foley (6) and Marissa Coit (5) were two of the six scorers for the Angels.
Dragons 24, Nets 22 – The “game of the day†turned out to be a tale of two halves as the Dragons got 16 points from Paulina Petras to edge the Nets. Thanks to some strong interior play from Petras, unselfish passing and quick ball movement, the Dragons jumped out to a 17-6 lead at the break. Nicole Regan and Rebecca Pierce each scored six points in the second half surge for the Nets that saw them come all that way back and take a brief 22-21 lead. However, a Jessica McGonagle free throw and another field goal by Petras sealed the victory for the Dragons.
