A group of Tufts University singers strutted their stuff for millions Monday and Tuesday night during NBC’s new reality show The Sing Off and made the cut to the next round.
The Beelzebubs, Tufts’ only all-male a cappella group, are competing for $100,000 and a Sony recording contract.
The Beelzebubs have so far stood out for their personality and charisma on-stage. They have managed to successfully and convincingly pull off several musically divergent songs despite singing without any instruments. They performed the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour on Monday and on Tuesday rapped Flo Rida’s Right Round before finishing off with the Styx’s Come Sail Away.
The show, hosted by Nick Lachey, debuted Monday night at 8PM and concludes on December 21 with live, phone-in voting.
The Beelzebubs were among five groups that have advanced to the third round of the competition, which will take place at 8PM on Wednesday on NBC.
Celebrity musician judges include Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five), Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men), and Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls).
The Bubs, as they are known on campus, are arguably Tufts’ best-known and most popular a cappella group. The group was founded in 1962, has recorded dozens of albums, and has won several awards. They also run two non-profit initiatives, the Bubs Foundation and Be the Music.
