The Mustang Baseball team earned their first Greater Boston League win of the season with their 8-5 victory over Malden on Tuesday.
Junior ace Danny Gilchrist pitched a complete game to improve his record to 2-1 on the season on the mound.
Medford led 4-1 in the 5th inning before Malden had a comeback to go up 5-4 in the bottom of the 5th. Medford responded in the 6th with a single from Rob Deluca and a two-out “moonshot” homerun to right center field from Gilchrist to move the Mustangs ahead 6-5. Medford then added two more runs in the 7th inning to finish the game 8-5.
Head Coach Nick Tucci said the team’s offensive attack was much improved from their last game as senior captain Danny Gunn, Gilchrist, Chris Salvati, Kyle Heath, Deluca and Andrew Pompeo all had multiple hit games.
“I told our team at the beginning of the year that we need to respond better through adversity. In the 6th inning, after having given up the lead to Malden, we responded very well to their surging comeback. We were the tougher team today and showed the resolve that is needed to be a championship team,” said Coach Tucci.
Medford is 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the GBL, heading into their game at Boston English on Thursday.
The junior varsity baseball team also defeated Malden to remain undefeated at 5-0 (1-0 in the GBL).
Head Coach Vin Macone said the team continued with good pitching and timely hitting to put away the Golden Tornadoes, 10-6 on Tuesday.
Freshman Corey Devlin picked up his second win of the season and first career GBL win to lead the Mustang JV’s to their victory over GBL rival Malden at Pine Banks. Devlin pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and striking out nine while walking one. Steve Center closed out the game in the bottom of the 7th by striking out the tying run at the plate.
Bob Milner, Mike Pizzi and Brian Enos led the Mustang JV offense. Pizzi was 3 for 4 with a walk and scored four times. Enos was 2 for 3 and scored twice. Milner had a 2 RBI standup triple and scored in the last inning to give the Mustang JV’s a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Mustangs head to Boston English on Thursday for a 10:00AM game.
