Girls Lax Shuts Out Malden
|Mustangs, Undefeated in GBL, in Hunt for League Title
– Allison Goldsberry
The Mustang varsity girls lacrosse team braved the rain and the cold on Wednesday afternoon to come away with a 14-0 shutout victory over Malden at Hormel Stadium.
It was the first shutout for sophomore goalie Rachel Keen, according to Head Coach Matt Galusi.
Olivia Timmins was the top scorer for Medford, netting four goals. Lauren O’Connor had three goals, while Madie Forcier and Katie O’Brien each contributed two goals. Ericka Silva and Leanne Bordonaro had one goal apiece, as did Leigh Williams, who netted her first goal of the season.
The Lady Mustangs are currently 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Greater Boston League. They are looking to repeat as GBL champs.
According to Coach Galusi, the team is at least guaranteed to be league co-champs after today’s win against Malden. However, he said the Mustangs are expecting a victory against Cambridge on Friday, which would seal the league title for Medford.
The Mustangs handily defeated Cambridge, 13-4, when they played them on April 21. Friday’s game against the Falcons is scheduled for 4:00PM at Hormel Stadium.
Friday’s Cambridge game is the last GBL match-up of the season for Medford. The team has only two more home games on Wednesday, May 5 and Monday, May 10 against Gloucester and Essex Agricultural Technical Institute, both of which they’ve beaten. They will be away on Wednesday, May 12, Thursday, May 13, and Saturday, May 15 competing against Central Catholic, Haverhill, and Lowell, respectively. The Mustangs’ only loss this season came at the hands of Central Catholic, and they beat Haverhill earlier in the season.
