|Medford Remains Undefeated with Victory Over Cambridge Thursday
– Allison Goldsberry
The Mustang junior varsity baseball team is tearing through its schedule this season and has yet to post a loss.
Medford currently stands undefeated at 9-0 and is 3-0 in the Greater Boston League.
On Thursday afternoon freshman Corey Devlin improved his record to 3-0 (2-0 GBL) in a 7-4 victory against Cambridge at Hickey Park.
“Devlin’s control was particularly sharp as he struck out 12 batters while allowing only 2 walks,” said JV Coach Vin Macone.
Sophomore JJ Lavoie led the offense, going 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBI’s despite returning from a two week layoff with a foot injury. Bob Milner was 1 for 3 with a walk, scoring twice.
Six of Medford’s runs came in the second inning, with key hits from Steve Center and John Lavoie and Grant Martignetti’s safety bunt scoring Nick Rocco.
Next up for the JV Mustangs is a trip to Everett on Tuesday, May 4 for a 4:00PM game and a home game against Malden on Thursday, May 6 at 4:00PM at Hickey Park.
The freshman baseball team also picked up a win against Cambridge on a wildly windy day that blew many shots foul. The frosh team defeated the Falcons, 4-1.
The varsity team unfortunately did not have a good game, with defensive errors and an inconsistent offensive effort leaving the Mustangs two runs behind Cambridge, 4-2.
The varsity ‘Stangs also head to Everett on Tuesday and host Malden on Thursday of next week.
The way the JV team is playing, our varsity should be stronger next season.
