The Medford School Committee conducted interviews of four finalists interested in becoming the next principal of the McGlynn Elementary School before an audience of parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff last week.

School Superintendent Roy Belson announced the School Committee’s choice during Monday’s School Committee meeting. Rebecca Sargent, currently Vice Principal of the Paul A. Dever Elementary School in Dorchester, has been selected as the new McGlynn Elementary School principal.

Sargent has been hired at $98,000 per year and has a two-year contract. She will officially be in the position in July. In the mean time, she will meet with school staff, parents, and students to become familiar with the school and community.

Sargent has been Vice Principal of the Paul A. Dever Elementary School since 2004 and has been with the Boston Public Schools system since 2002. She began teaching in 1995, when she was a volunteer ESL teacher in Boston. Sargent spent a year in Columbia teaching ESL and kindergarten. She later taught pre-school in Newton, Grade 5 in Lawrence, Grade 4 in Chelsea, and Grade 5 in South Boston.

Sargent received her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Child Psychology from Colby-Sawyer College. She has a Master’s degree in elementary education from Simmons College and has a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from UMass-Boston.

Sargent has several educational certifications in Massachusetts, including Principal/Assistant Principal for both PreK-6 and 5-8, ELL, and Elementary 1-6, among others.
