Mustang Softball Sweeps Somerville in Double-header

The Lady Mustangs’ bats came alive in recording a double-header sweep of the Somerville Highlanders by convincing scores of 19-1 and 14-2 on Thursday afternoon. The first game was a continuation of a previously shortened game due to rain.
In the first game the local nine had two big innings that broke open the game. Medford scored six runs in the 2nd and ten runs in the 5th while hammering out eighteen hits. Senior JT Rizzo, junior Kasey Moran and sophomore Jackie Pellecchia each contributed three hits while senior captain Nicole Lopilato and juniors Kristina Bove and Victoria Luongo chipped in with two hits apiece. Bove also hit a big three-run homer while Pellecchia scored four runs and added three RBI’s.
Senior pitcher Jess Mortellite picked up the victory while sophomore Rayann Staude pitched the last inning for the win.
In the second game the Lady Mustangs spotted the Somerville nine an early 1-0 lead but responded with back to back five-run innings to put away the victory. Bove pitched a strong five innings with Staude finishing up the last two innings. Freshman Sam Lopilato banged out three hits, scored three runs and drove home three runs while big sister Nicole contributed two hits along with Moran, Luongo, Bove and sophomore Emily Welch. Bove had three RBI’s and Welch had two RBI’s and scored three runs.
Medford is now 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Greater Boston League.
The Mustangs head to Winchester on Saturday for a 10:00AM game.
