Junior Jean Perez and junior Chris Buccieri also contributed with some timely hitting and solid defense.
Sophomore Sam Perez and junior Rob Deluca started the season with the JV’s and hit the ball well before being called up to varsity. Sam Perez accomplished an amazing feat. In the first high school JV game that he played, he hit the first pitch of his first at bat over the left field fence for a 3-run homer in Waltham. A couple of weeks later, he was called up to varsity. In the first varsity game that he played, he hit the first pitch of his first at bat over the left field fence for a 3-run homer at Playstead Park.
The Mustang JV baseball pitching staff was led by a group of freshmen: Corey Devlin, Chris Hayes, John Lavoie, Sean Doncaster, Anthony Brown and Nick Rocco. Sophomores Steve Center and JJ Lavoie also contributed with solid pitching performances. Devlin and Hayes had the opportunity to pitch for the varsity team.
The Mustang JV baseball defense was outstanding all season. Although most players gained experience at multiple positions, the standout defensive players were Steve Scire 3B/1B; Grant Martignetti 2B; Sean Doncaster and John Lavoie SS; JJ Lavoie 3B; Chris Hayes 1B and the outfield trio of LF Mike Pizzi, CF Bob Milner and RF Brian Enos.
“This group of JV baseball players learned how to play as a team and to win as a team. Their unselfish play led to the winning record and the future of Medford Mustang is very encouraging,” said Coach Vin Macone.
The freshman baseball team also had a good season. The Mustangs finished with a 7-7 record. The team is pictured below with Coaches Dennis Ingram and Josh Glionna.
