Matignon Baseball Suprises with D4 North Win
|– Allison Goldsberry
The 12th-seeded Matignon baseball team has walked away with the Division 4 North Championship after soundly defeating #2 seed Georgetown 9-2 on Saturday at LeLacheur Park in Lowell.
The upset victory is huge for the Warriors, who with a 7-13 regular season record were seeded last. They defeated 5th seed Dorchester Academy 6-1, shut out 4th seed Trinity Catholic 4-0, and beat top seed Monument High School of South Boston 11-9 before facing Georgetown.
“We played in a tough league and a tough division,” Head Coach Paul Cashman told the Boston Herald, “but come tournament time we were ready to play.”
Freshman and Medford resident Nick Tortora helped lift his team to victory on the mound. He carried a shut-out into the sixth inning and struck out four while allowing just five hits.
“He pitched what was a tremendous game for anyone, let alone a freshman,” said Coach Cashman.
The Warriors will now face the South Division 4 champion, Cohasset (14-6, seeded 5th) on June 16 at Frasier Field in Lynn.
Other Medford residents on the varsity team include junior Philip McDonald, junior Thomas Farren, and sophomore Ryan Clavette.
Great job Warriors!
