Rep. Sciortino Receives Education Endorsements

State Representative Carl Sciortino announced that a number of prominent education organizations have endorsed his re-election. The groups include the American Federation of Teachers-Massachusetts, the Boston Teachers Union, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. These endorsements come on the heels of Rep. Sciortino being named ‘Legislator of the Year’ by the Massachusetts School Psychologists Association for his continued work with educators to push for meaningful education reform.

“Educating children – our next generation of modern thinkers and dedicated workers – is one of the greatest duties our Commonwealth has,” said Rep. Sciortino. “By lowering class sizes, increasing funding, and providing alternative learning environments for students who need it, we can ensure that every child is given the support and opportunity to succeed. I’ve been proud to work alongside our state’s educators to determine where our students need the most help and devise innovative solutions to those problems at the state level.”

“The Boston Teachers Union is proud to support Carl Sciortino in his bid for re-election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives,” said Richard Stutman, BTU President. “Carl’s commitment to working with us is evident in his fight for adequate funding for public education and as a voice against high stakes testing, such as MCAS, as the only measure of a school’s success. We look forward to continue working with Carl to create the most effective education policy in the coming years.”

Rep. Sciortino is a three-term Democratic State Representative in the 34th Middlesex District, serving Somerville and Medford. In his first three terms, he has been a strong advocate for MCAS reform, filing legislation that would prohibit the use of MCAS as the sole reason to deny a high school diploma. He also successfully passed amendments to the Education Reform Act of 2010 dealing with issues related to charter school funding and student mobility.

Rep. Sciortino is running for re-election on November 2nd. To learn more or get involved, visit www.electcarl.org.
