The Arlington Catholic Boys and Girls Cross Country team split a dual meet with Bishop Fenwick and Matignon on Tuesday. The girls improved their record to 3-0 with a double win while the boys endured a close loss and now have a 2-1 record.

The girls defeated Bishop Fenwick 24-32 and Matignon 15-50 at the Cougars’ home course at Menotomy Rocks Park in Arlington.

The Cougars were led by sensational freshman Kaitlin McCauley of Watertown, who smashed her own school record by 1 minute and 18 seconds with a time of 20:41 on the 3-mile course.

Sophomore Janelle Solvilette of Woburn ran an outstanding race, finishing third and breezing by the old course record with twenty-seven seconds to spare. Senior captain Lauren Reis of Arlington placed fifth, junior captain Brigid Kirkpatrick of Medford was sixth, and juniors Becca Gonsalves-Lamontage (9th) and Mary Stanton (10th), both of Woburn, rounded out the top ten.

The boys team lost a heartbreaker to defending league champion Bishop Fenwick, who defeated the Cougars by a mere one point.

More school course records were broken, with senior captain Joe Donlon (Stoneham) beating the mark by four seconds with his 17:19 time. Donlon finished second behind Fenwick’s defending league champ John Harrington, who also smashed the course record.

While AC and Fenwick fought neck and neck, the Cougars soundly defeated Matignon 18 to 41.

Sophomore Kevin Connors of Belmont finished third, Medford junior Kyle Liberti was seventh, junior Chris Laffey (Billerica) ninth, junior Nolan Hart (Medford) tenth, Andrew Cohen (Waltham) eleventh, and sophomore Matt Woods (Arlington) placed thirteenth.

The Cougars head to the Ocean State Cross Country Championships in Rhode Island on Saturday.
