Mustang Soccer Earns Win, Honors Local Boy
|The 6-1-1 boys varsity soccer team pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burke High School on Saturday. Senior captain Cesar Silva scored the Mustangs’ first goal with a hard blast past the Burke defenders and goalie. Senior captain David Pires also scored and helped lift Medford to victory after the team lagged behind Burke High for the first half.
Saturday’s game was a very special one, with the Mustang coaching staff and players dedicating the game to Gidge Farraher, a boy who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. The six-year-old soccer fan was the Honorary Mustang Captain for the day. He spent time in the locker room preparing for the game with the team and was presented with a team jacket, T-shirt, and autographed ball. Gidge led the team out of the locker room to the field for the game and presented his mother with bouquet of blue and white flowers from the team. During the game Gidge assisted on the sidelines with water, huddles and after the win he led the line to congratulate the opposing team for a good game.
“He had a wonderful smile filled day. He touched our lives from the players to the coaches. It was an honor for all our players and coaches to get to know Gidge,” said Boys Freshman Coach Mike Cugno.
