Serve-a-thon Nets $2,500+ for Breast Cancer Research
In order to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment, the Mustangs Volleyball Program ran a serve-a-thon on Saturday, October 23. Medford volleyball players and coaches attempted 100 serves each for which they got either flat donations or donations per good serve. All proceeds from the serve-a-thon went to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The idea for a serve-a-thon came from junior student-athlete Christine Feeley. Christine approached head coach Alice Beth FitzPatrick with the idea on the way home from an away game. All of the players were supportive of the idea. Breast cancer awareness is an important issue to Christine as a close family friend lost her battle with the disease in 2009.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation supplied the program with informational flyers and pink ribbon stickers to support the Mustangs’ efforts. As a program, 3,010 serves were attempted and 2,385 were served in, a 79% serving average. The young women of the program raised a total of $2,578.45! That was a thousand dollars more than the original goal set by the team. The top servers of the day were Miranda Arena with 96 serves in, Christine Feeley with 95 serves in, and Stephanie Nguyen with 93 serves in.
The Mustangs finished their season third in the Greater Boston League with a 4-4 league record. The team faced some very competitive programs and improved in their overall play throughout the season. The program is graduating 7 seniors and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors. 2010 was the second season that the program had three teams, varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen, and is looking forward to having those teams in the years to come.
