Mustang Hoops Prepare for Holiday Tourneys, GBL Games

Former Mustang basketball star Andrew White surprised his teammates with a visit at Tuesday’s game.

Head Coach Leo Burke and the girls varsity basketball team notched their third win of the season with their 51-40 on-the-road victory over Dracut on Tuesday. Tania Holmes led the Mustangs’ effort with seventeen points, while Emily Welch added ten points and had fourteen rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs are 3-0 heading into the Winchester Holiday Tournament on December 28 and 29. After the holiday break the Mustangs host Everett on Friday, January 7.

The boys varsity basketball team lost a tough one to Malden Catholic on Tuesday. Medford was down by thirteen at the half and came back into the game midway through the fourth quarter and took a five point lead but was unable to hold onto it, losing 84-72. Danny Gilchrist led the Mustangs with twenty-three points, including hitting four 3 point shots in the game. Maurice Magras had thirteen points and Sean Doncaster had eleven points.

Over the holiday break the Mustangs will participate in the Rockland Holiday Tournament and will visit Stoneham, now coached by former Medford assistant Paul Tanglis, on January 2. Pope John will visit Medford on January 5 and the Mustangs have their first GBL match-up on January 7 when they head to Everett.

2010 MHS grad and basketball star Andrew White, who currently plays ball for Salem State, stopped by Tuesday’s game. Andrew is one of only five Mustangs to score over 1,000 points in a high school career. He is pictured above greeting Head Coach Anthony Faradie. White’s older brother David, pictured at left, is an assistant coach and also a former basketball standout for Medford.
