|– Allison Goldsberry
On Tuesday the girls varsity basketball team notched their tenth win of the season and clinched a state tournament berth with a decisive 51-35 win over Austin Prep.
Aleah McAusland-Ace led the Mustang offense with thirteen points and six rebounds. It was the sophomore’s first start of the year as she was filling in for talented junior Emily Welch, who is out with a concussion. Junior Tania Holmes added nine points and had eight assists in what was a total team effort, according to Head Coach Leo Burke.
The win leaves the Mustangs with a 10-3 overall record. They are undefeated in the Greater Boston League at 4-0 and the GBL title is on the line in the next few games. Medford is currently in first place in the GBL and Cambridge has one loss to the Mustangs. Medford must beat Cambridge and Somerville to win the league title. It is unclear at this point when Medford’s game with Somerville will be rescheduled.
The Mustangs are in Malden on Friday and host Cambridge on Saturday night at 7pm.
Next week Medford heads to Revere on Monday and hosts Dracut on Thursday and Malden on Saturday.
The entire Medford/Cambridge game is currently playing on Channel 15 at 9am, 11am, 6pm, and 10pm.
