The varsity girls basketball team continued to assert their dominance in the Greater Boston League, posting back-to-back victories over Malden and Cambridge over the weekend to remain undefeated in the league with six wins.
The victories all but tied up the league title for the Lady Mustangs, who still need to play Malden and Somerville one more time.
On Friday Medford traveled to arch rival Malden High and came away with 52-46 win. Leading the way was junior captain Tania Holmes with eighteen points. Senior captain Kasey Moran was “outstanding again on both ends of the floor,” adding seven points and four steals, while McAusland-Ave added seven points and freshman Sarah Donnelly grabbed six points, said Head Coach Leo Burke.
On Saturday the Cambridge Falcons came into Mustang territory needing the win to stay alive in the hunt for the GBL title. The Mustangs would not be denied and took this one with a score of 60-54 to take sole possession of the GBL.
The game went up and down the court for a full thirty-two minutes with each team giving everything they had. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Holmes with twenty-three points. She was 13 for 14 from the foul line and added six assists. Freshman Sarah Donnelly had eleven points and fifteen rebounds and was essential on both ends of the court controlling the boards. Junior Jackie Pellecchia chipped in with ten points and six rebounds.
Coach Burke said this is probably the best thirty-two minutes of basketball that his team has played since he has taken over the program.
“My girls took everything that Cambridge threw at us and responded,†said Coach Burke.
Medford is currently 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the GBL. Their record has already landed them a spot in the state tournament.
The Lady Mustangs travel to Revere on Monday, February 14 and finish the season with four home games. Medford hosts Dracut on Thursday, February 17; Malden on Saturday, February 19 (Senior Night); Somerville on Tuesday, February 22; and closes the season on Wednesday, February 23 with Salem.
