Kiwanis, Rotary Club Support ‘Kindles for Kids’ Program

KindlesThanks to the extremely generous support of two local community service organizations, the Medford Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club of Medford, the Medford Public Schools has been able to launch its “Kindles for Kids” program.

The “Kindles for Kids” program will provide clusters of twelve Kindles to district teachers/specialists to incorporate in their instruction. This would include activities such as reading different genres of books, researching and creating projects, accessing newspapers such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe and reading magazines. The “Kindles for Kids” program is part of the district’s literacy action plan, which strives to provide students with the opportunity, support, and necessary resources to advance to their highest level of literacy in reading, writing, listening, and speaking across content areas throughout their school experience.

The Kiwanis presented school officials with a dozen Kindle e-readers at their January 30 meeting. The gift was given in memory of Angela Caraviello, mother of President-elect Rick Caraviello. The Kiwanis Club has support child literacy initiatives in past years. Every year the club purchases and distributes books to all children in grades one and three.

The Rotary Club of Medford has generously contributed $2,000 to support the “Kindles for Kids” project. Doug Shoop, Rotary Club President, recently made the donation and is pictured above with Media/Technology/Fine Art Director Richard Trotta and Assistant School Superintendent Beverly Nelson. The Rotary Club is also a strong supporter of literacy in Medford and this year has donated a dictionary to every third grader in the city.
