Medford Community Read Picks up on Farm Theme
|The book selection for the Medford Public Library’s 2011 Community Read is Five Thousand Days Like This One: An American Family History by Jane Brox. When the author’s father died, she took over the family farm in Dracut, and from her experiences crafted a book about family history, small farms, apples, and the immigrant history of Middlesex County.
We have also picked three books for young readers. The Newbery Award winner Lyddie by Katherine Paterson and The Bobbin Girl by Emily McCully both tell stories of young women in the Lowell textile mills. For our youngest readers we have the book Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell. This fun story about an over-worked duck, a lazy farmer, and the farm animals who come to the rescue fits right in with the farm theme of the Read.
This year’s read events will take place in April and May. Books will be available to borrow and purchase in the early spring.
We are particularly happy to announce that we will be offering a bus tour to the Brox Farm on April 10, and the author Jane Brox will be speaking at the Library on May 23!
