Head Coach Jack Dempsey and the varsity girls softball team hit the road this weekend for two games and came away with two victories, defeating Framingham 13-8 Friday and Winchester 16-3 Saturday.
It might have been cold in Framingham Friday afternoon, but the Lady Mustangs’ bats were hot. The team was once again led by “junior speedster” Shannon Hussey, who was 3-3, with a walk, two RBI’s, and three runs scored, according to Coach Dempsey. Junior Jackie Pellecchia continued her hot hitting as well, going 2-2 with four RBI’s. Other hitting stars included senior captain Kristina Bove, 2-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored, senior captain Sarah Moulton, with two hits and an RBI, and freshman Sarah Donnelly, with two hits and two RBI’s. Junior Rayann Staude “pitched well,” picking up her second victory of the season.
On Saturday morning the girls braved the cold again as well as a Winchester pitcher who retired the first eight Mustang hitters before Medford could muster a base runner. Junior Emily Welch got a base on balls and was followed by the “torrid hitting” Hussey, who lined a double down the left field line to score Welch, tying the game at 1-1. The Lady Mustangs fell behind 3-1 in the fourth inning before erupting for nine runs in the fifth inning with a barrage of hitting from all the players. The team continued their strong hitting in the fifth inning with Bove banging out a three run homer to ice the game for the visiting Mustangs.
Hussey collected her seventh hit in her last eight at bats as well as scoring four runs and driving in two more. Clean-up hitter Pellecchia hammered two doubles, drove in four runs, and scored three, senior captain Kasey Moran had three hits and two runs scored, and Bove contributed two hits, four RBI’s, and three runs scored. Moulton, senior captain and catcher Victoria Luongo, Welch, sophomore Sam LoPilato, and Donnelly each contributed hits, said Coach Dempsey.
Bove improved her record to 3-0 on the mound pitching a seven hitter and striking out three Winchester Sachems.
The Mustangs are currently 5-0 on the season. They have their work cut out for them in a major Greater Boston League matchup when reigning GBL champ Malden and all-scholastic junior pitcher Kiara Amos come to town on Tuesday at 10AM.
