Mayor Urges ‘Going Green’ on Earth Day
|Mayor McGlynn and the Office of Energy and Environment encourage you to celebrate the 40th Earth Day this Friday April 22 by doing something beneficial for the environment.
Mayor McGlynn stated: “In helping to keep Medford green, I will be walking to work on Earth Day and I’m encouraging all Medford residents, who are able, to do the same. Go green Medford!”
Below is a list of some activities you can do to help improve and reduce our impact on the environment. And remember Earth Day doesn’t have to be the only day you participate, the more we do the better off our earth will be!
Suggested Earth Day Activities:
– Walk to work if you can!
– Use a coffee mug as opposed to a disposable cup for your coffee this morning
– Reuse a mug or water bottle for water throughout the day as opposed to buying bottled water
– Walk to Medford Square to complete your errands as opposed to driving
– Use reusable bags for your groceries
– Decline plastic bags for small purchases and either carry them or use a reusable bag
– Recycle something instead of throwing it away. Medford makes it easy by allowing you to mix paper, plastic, cans, etc. all in one bin
– Take public transportation
– Ride a bike to your destination
– Car pool with friends as opposed to taking numerous cars
– Turn off the lights when you leave a room
– Turn off your computer AND monitor at the end of the day
– Make sure to turn off sinks after use so they aren’t dripping and water being wasted
– Turn off the water while brushing your teeth to conserve water
– Turn off the heat and close windows in your office when you leave for the weekend to conserve energy
– Consider starting a garden and growing your own vegetables, herbs, and/or flowers
– Support local businesses by purchasing locally grown produce and products. Remember the Medford Farmer’s Market opens on June 16th 2011 and will be located in Whole Foods parking lot
Every little bit counts so thanks for your participation and have a great Earth Day!
