Local Italian restaurant Il Faro has been seized by the state due to non-payment of taxes, according to a sign posted on its door.

A sign posted on the door on May 11 reads:

“The Business Property of Il Faro, Inc. had been seized for nonpayment of taxes, and is now in possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Any person who attempts to tamper or interfere with this property will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The highly rated restaurant, located at 21 Main Street in Medford Square, has been a family-run business since 1986, according to its website.

Chef-Owner Pino Longo, from Calabria, served up Northern and Southern Italian dishes. The restaurant was well-liked by locals and word of its closing has surprised many.

A phone call made to the restaurant on Wednesday afternoon was not answered.
