Late Rally Not Enough for Baseball Team
|– Allison Goldsberry
The Mustang baseball team lost a 10-9 heart-breaker that went into extra innings against the Everett Crimson Tide on Sunday.
Medford got off to a rocky start with three unearned runs early on. By the time the seventh inning came around, the Mustangs were down 7-2. Medford bounced back and responded with five runs, including a two-run homer by senior captain Chris Salvati and a solo homerun by senior captain Danny Gilchrist. The game was tied 7-7 heading into the eighth inning but the Mustangs weren’t able to close the deal.
Head Coach Mike Nestor acknowledged that his team wasn’t playing their best baseball. With the rain wreaking havoc on the schedule, the Mustangs hadn’t played a game in a week. However, Coach Nestor was glad the team made such a strong comeback.
“It was good that they came back. They showed that they could compete…They could play with anybody…They didn’t give up,” said Coach Nestor.
Coach Nestor said the team also learned they need to really focus and play hard from the first pitch.
The Mustangs have a full schedule this week. They visit Cambridge on Monday, head to Waltham on Tuesday, host Stoneham on Wednesday, go to Whittier Tech on Thursday, and participate in the annual Holovak and Coughlin tournament with Arlington, Arlington Catholic, and Malden Catholic over Memorial Day weekend. Medford currently has eleven wins and three losses.
Chris Salvati helped open up the Mustang offense more than once, including slamming a two-run homer in the seventh.
Nick Murphy was “huge” for his team, batting in some runs against the visiting Crimson Tide.
Danny Gilchrist helped Medford tie it up in the seventh inning with a solo homerun.
Chris Hayes was “big” for the Mustangs against Everett on Sunday, said Coach Nestor.
