Route 93 Bridge Replacement Underway

Construction work on a $98.1 million project to replace fourteen Route 93 bridge superstructures in Medford is well underway. This weekend crews are working on the bridge the carries Route 93 North over Riverside Avenue. The Route 93 South part of the bridge will be replaced on the weekend of August 5. In total seven bridges will be replaced over the span of two months, with both the north and southbound sides being replaced on different weekends. Work this weekend is expected to be completed by 5AM on Monday or else a multi-million dollar fine will be imposed. For a full schedule of the construction see the project website.

According to MassDOT, throughout the course of the weekend, traffic on Route 93 will be limited to two lanes in each direction over a six mile segment between Exit 28 (Sullivan Square) in Somerville and Exit 36 (Montvale Avenue) in Stoneham. Traffic on Route 93 North will be directed through a median crossover near the Somerville/Medford line and then travel in counter-flow operation on the southbound barrel of the highway before traveling through a second median crossover near Spot Pond in Stoneham. Route 93 directional traffic will be separated by a moveable “zipper lane” barrier. Access to and from many of the ramps on Route 93 North in this area will be restricted.

There are several local road closures and resulting detours in Medford- please click here for details.
