Moran Boston Globe Scholar-Athlete

Congratulations to Kasey Moran, Medford High School Class of 2011, for being named one of the Boston Globe’s Richard Phelps Scholar-Athletes. Moran, a four-time Greater Boston League batting champion, plans on playing softball at St. Anselm College. The award comes with a $3,000 scholarship. Moran is one of fourteen students state wide honored with the award and she is the first MHS student to ever receive the honor.
Moran helped lead the cross-country and basketball team to a GBL championship this year, and led the GBL in batting average with a .551 during softball. Moran, who is counselor at basketball and softball camps, has a 3.8 GPA and ranks 22nd in her class. Moran also participated in numerous extra curricular activities, including cooking for the homeless, the math leads club and the walk for cancer.
“Not only does she put every ounce of effort into her schoolwork and varsity sports, but she volunteers regularly,†said Ms. Westmark, her guidance counselor. “She has volunteered every summer as a camp counselor, and has given over 60 hours of work to the local soup kitchen.â€
“Kasey is someone who is so deserving of the award because of her dedication, her attitude, and her willingness to do anything her coach would ask of her,†said MHS Softball Coach Jack Dempsey. “She is an incredible team leader who inspires her teammates to be the best they can be.â€
