Candidate Order Established for Mayoral Ballot
|For the first time in over a decade the city is taking steps to prepare for a preliminary election for the mayoral race this fall. Three candidates are formally running for mayor, making a preliminary election necessary to narrow the field to two candidates. On Friday morning City Clerk Ed Finn and Board of Registrar of Voters members Richard Laskey and Tom Fahey conducted a ballot position drawing to establish the order of the mayoral candidates on the ballot. The random drawing resulted in an alphabetical list, with incumbent Mayor Michael McGlynn to be listed third on the ballot, preceded by Anthony D’Antonio and John Byers.
The preliminary election is scheduled for September 13. The preliminary will take place as long as no candidates withdraw before the August 11 deadline. The three candidates could also agree to eliminate the preliminary election to save the city upwards of $50,000 and to simply try their chances in the November 8 final election.

Allison, thank you for covering this. I was disappointed that Mayor McGlynn only sent representatives to this important event. As you noted, the first time in over a decade. That is most significant. The residents deserve a robust conversation with ALL the candidates for School Committee, City Council and Mayor. Hopefully there will be a number of debates.
