New York City Mayor and Medford native Michael Bloomberg was thrust into the national spotlight as he helped lead his city through what could have been a major disaster for the Big Apple. Mayor Bloomberg had to make some controversial decisions for preventative action to keep people safe, including evacuating lower Manhattan and closing the subway system. Bloomberg’s press conferences and hurricane updates were broadcast nationally as people anxiously watched Hurricane Irene work its way up the East Coast. Despite some flooding and power outages, NYC seems to be getting back on its feet.
“All in all, we are in pretty good shape because of the exhaustive steps I think we took to prepare for whatever came our way. The very best City employees and first responders are going to work nonstop make sure that through the storm’s aftermath we are safe,” said Bloomberg in a statement released on August 28.
Bloomberg has been Mayor of New York since 2001 and is currently in his third term.
