|Lady Anchors Continue Successful Run
Volleyball:
The Saint Clement Lady Anchors continue their successful season by capturing two wins from Boston International and Cristo Rey of Boston. The ladies improved their overall record to 7-1 and league record to 3-1. They are currently still tied for second with the Pope John Tigers.
After a rocky start, the Lady Anchors defeated Boston International three games to one in the Anchordome on September 20. Junior captain Judy D’Haiti (Cambridge) led the team with fifteen service points. On the net, sophomore Kayla Morello (Medford) had a career high of fifteen kills while junior co-captain Kristina Ofoedu (Somerville) added a little spice to the win with eight kills. When the Lady Anchors traveled to Dorchester to face Cristo Rey of Boston, their luck only continued. The ladies took a 3-0 win over the Knights. Freshman Jessica Popken (Medford) showed off her powerful serve with fifteen service points and ten aces. Junior captain Allison Caloggero (Medford) also contributed to the win, scoring fourteen service points, and giving the Anchor fans something to cheer about with seven aces. Ofoedu helped the team out with fourteen service points and gave the Lady Anchors a cushion with eight aces.
The Lady Anchors will host the tie breaker for second place against the Lady Tigers of Pope John on Thursday, September 29 in the Anchordome at 4:00PM. On Tuesday, October 4, the ladies of Saint Clement will travel to Framingham to face the Marian Mustangs, currently sitting in first place in the Catholic Central League Small. The St. Clement Anchormen are now 3-0 as after a 35-12 win over the Mystic Valley Eagles on Saturday, September 24. The victory was sweet because the Mystic Valley Eagles shut out the Anchormen on their home turf last year.
Leading the way for the Anchormen was Matthew Pereira (Somerville), who had a big day on both sides of the ball while filling in as running back when starter Alberto Lopez (Chelsea) suffered a sprained ankle early in the second quarter. Pereira tallied 147 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns for the Anchormen while posting thirteen tackles on defense. Periera’s efforts earned him the Boston Herald’s High School Player of the week.
The Anchormen scored first with a 40-yard run by Periera and an extra point by Andrew Carvahlo (Somerville). Early in the second quarter Mystic Valley Eagle senior Klysman Afonso ran in the end zone with Mystic Valley’s first touchdown. The Anchormen answered back quickly with a 19-yard pass from junior QB Jamey Thompson (Somerville) to sophomore Junior Oyaronbi (Chelsea) and 22-yard TD run by Michael Julce (Malden). Periera tacked on his second TD of the day in the third quarter, but the Mystic Valley Eagles tried to regain momentum with a 73-yard fumble return by Brian O’Connor. St. Clement answered with Periera’s third TD of the game to seal the victory.
The Anchormen take on their league rivals, the Matignon Warriors, under the lights Friday, September 30 at 7:00PM at Dilboy Field.
