Medford on the Mystic Arts Festival in October

Medford on the Mystic Arts Festival is coming to our community beginning Saturday, October 1 offering exciting programs throughout the month. CACHE in Medford, a coalition of nineteen art-based organizations plus local businesses has organized an innovative month-long program to celebrate local talented artists, our history, culture and the Mystic River. Come with your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors for a series of events that will have something for everyone.

The festival will kick-off on Saturday, October 1 with two unique events. An Academy Award winning silent film starring Clara Bow at the historic Chevalier Theatre on Forest Street, 7:00 PM. This film will be accompanied with live organ music by internationally renowned organist Peter Krasinski of Brookline. This World War I story tells about two American aviators who fly daring missions and has some of the most dramatic aerial sequences every portrayed on film. At a cost of $2 million, it is a remarkable film that had the highest production budget in movie history when filmed in 1927. It was supported by the War Department and $16 million worth of government manpower and equipment. A must see! Advance tickets are $10 and available at Medford TV and Electronics, 25 Salem Street or may be purchased at the door.

Also on October 1-2, a revolutionary war encampment, The First Patriots: Rebels at Riverbend Park will be held from 10 am to 5 pm located in the area between the McGlynn and Andrews Middle Schools on Freedom Way, off Riverside Avenue. The two-day event will feature military drills, music, crafts and a Colonial school organized by Ryan Hayward.

Nearby the war encampment on October 1, there will be a Festival Welcome Tent where the program booklet will be available listing all the events, dates and places of the festival events. In addition, information about TABOLAB, Take a Book or Leave a Book will be distributed. TABOLAB is a community based organization created for kids by kids with a green concept that promotes literacy. For more information, go to www.tabolab.org. At the Festival Welcome

Tent, children accompanied by an adult will receive a free book in conjunction with TABOLAB and the national program Read Across America. One book per family while the supply lasts. Free candy, pinwheels and other surprises!

That is only the beginning of the month-long festival the organizers believe will have something for everyone. For presentation throughout the beautiful month of October, the member organizations of CACHE in Medford and local businesses have organized (12) twelve special events and four exhibits at various locations in the city. All the activities and events are FREE, with the exception of two programs that are fundraising programs. The scope of the festival is unique and details about each program may be seen on the website www.medfordfestival.org. You can also participate in the conversation on facebook Medford on the Mystic Arts Festival, and CACHE in Medford, and Wings.

A day of fun and festivities will be held at the Mystic River Celebration at the Condon Shell, Route 16 in Medford on October 22 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Enjoy live musical performances, artisan crafts, food vendors, art exhibits, activities for kids, an interactive outdoor art installation the Mystical River and lots more. Bring a chair or blanket and embrace the celebration.

Without the initial grant from the Medford Arts Council and our primary sponsor Brookline Bank this month-long celebration would not be possible. We look forward to a great festival and to seeing you at one of the events.
